Earl the Sheep – Watching

Children’s Message – Advent 3A – Watching

Who do we have in our stable?

Ollie the Ox – Waiting (for his foot to get better)

Hansel and Gretel the Goats – Hoping (for their mother and father to come looking for them)

Today we have some sheep! Their names are Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi and…Earl.

Earl’s the sheep that’s outside here – he’s watching.

Have you heard the story about Earl and his brother sheep?

Well just last night, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi and Earl were out in the fields with a group of shepherds.

It was way past their bedtime and they were getting tired.  They were trying to keep their eyes open, but every once in awhile their heads would drop and they would fall asleep, and then they’d hear a noise and wake back up again!

Well Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi and Earl had finally fallen asleep.  They were snoring away!  When all of a sudden…a huge light appeared in the sky and there was an angel!  They were so scared!

But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to tell you some great news!  Baby Jesus is going to be born. You will find him in a stable lying in a manger!

So what do you think Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi and Earl did?

They ran to the town as fast as they could.  (The shepherds couldn’t keep up with them – see? they’re not here yet!)

They went to the stable to find the baby – but the baby wasn’t there yet either.

So Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi decided to go into the stable to wait for the baby.

Earl was so excited he couldn’t sleep.   He couldn’t even lie down!  He couldn’t even go into the stable!

Earl stayed outside watching – watching for the baby Jesus to come!
